Hey Guys;

Fortwodriver seems to be having the "SQUADS" first con-mod so far. Any advice or experiences to help him out? I will post a couple soon. Good things are worth waiting for Fortwo....hang in there!!

Well, the best way to get the Z5 to sound like the ZX is to add a second battery in series, and adjust the pickup height so that you get the best sound from the strings. Well, that's not quite true...upgrading to Bartolini Electronics is probably the best way. The battery mod is just the least expensive...

...I find I use the Z5 in situations where I'd go for a J-Bass, and the ZX is first call for a more "modern" sound. Dunno if that helps, if anything else comes to mind, I'll register it...

I'm going to be putting Nord Fat Stacks in with a 3 band Bart pre (+mid-shift control) - I'm also putting in the switch to do the coil drop on the fat stacks to go single-coil. I play through a number of amps and even into my own EA rig, I find the stock Z6 electronics to be very tubby and synthetically woody. Also, I got a couple of nasty splinters off the silly wood pickup covers.

AFTER I FOUND OUT THAT MIKE WASNT DOING ANY LEFTY ZXs, I KNEW I HAD TO MOD MY Z6. I THEN DECIDED TO GO MTD STYLE WITH THE BART PUPS & PRE. BRIAN RISTOLA OF BEST BASS GEAR SUGGESTED A SEPERATE SERIES/PARALLEL SWITCH FOR EACH PUP FOR DIFFERENT TONE COMBINATIONS. AWESOME IDEA!! I AM PULLING TONES I COULD ONLY DREAM ABOUT BEFORE. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD EVER EVEN THINK OF MODIFYING AN AMERICAN MTD, BUT ITS A VERY REWARDING FEELING TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL MOD ON A KINGSTON.
JUST TRYING TO BRIDGE THE GAP A LITTLE.

My mod was simple...add a second 9v to a Kingston Z5 in series for more headroom (not power). A set of Dean Markley Alchemy Strings, and then one of my techs adjusting the stock pickup height for maximum resonance of the strings...voila, I'm happy! Mike cautions though that the electronics aren't rated to run at 18v. My friend ran his at that for over a year, and I've not had any problems in the two months I've run mine. While my ZX is still nicer, I'm very pleased with the improvement in the Z5, especially with the mid range.

I bought my Z5 with the intention of upgrading. Needless to say the upgrades were a success. This bass sings all day long. The Audere 4 band is one of the most versatile pre's I have come across. And the DC 5's.....well....they are what they are. GGGGGRRRRREEEEAAAATTT!!!!!
