Well, first off, Round wounds if you like Jaco, Percy, Manring. Also, get the neck as flat as you can, and drop the strings as low as you can. That is a big part of the Mwah sound. Also, as the others asked, what type of board. I have a passive Ki...
So far so good... Tonight and tomorrow night are the last two days of our RENT production - which I'll be playing with the MTD instead of the SRay... It ended up being a fairly easy transition. They like the tone of the MTD with the Nordys in it much better and it's a lot easier for me dial in what I need in the middle of the performance (a lot of volume changes but I don't own a volume pedal)...
The fat-stacks are amazing pickups - they do have a voice that's got the girth of a vintage bass with the balance of a modern pickup when used with the Bart preamp... I can get anything from a burpy jazz tone to a really round wooly p-bass tone...

So far so good... Got the replacement Fat Stack pickup from Nordy... It's all working properly now.. I'm currently running the pre in 9v mode - but can easily link up the other battery connector to go 18 when the desire comes - so far haven't needed the extra headroom...
So back into the fray the MTD goes... Trust me, while it's been on the "bench" I've missed it! ...
Hi there Speedy...
I'll head over to the mod squad forum...
I've played 5 string the longest - and did so because I was reading charts written with a low C or low B and no "cheats" to get around it... Paul McCartney used eadgc for a while on his WAL bass - on a 35 scale bass you're going to have fairly tight strings... I do use the C sometimes when I'm playing with others who don't know the material so well - I can occasionally use the high C in starting whatever song the group is trying to play - but otherwise the C is used more as a "position reserve" in case I have to jump across the octave quickly and can't change my hand position in time. I can go up to the C string, relax my hand then move down to the note on a lower string to finish the progression...
Cheers!
